  1. My Gluten-Free Journey...

The book I started with that gave me the most information and that I highly recommend is “The Gluten Connection” by Shari Lieberman. I continue to go back to this book for review! Also, a couple of recipe books that I recommend to get started with are “Cookbook for Kids & Busy Adults” by Connie Sarros & “The Gluten-Free Gourmet” by Bette Hagman. Both books have great recipes and helpful cooking hints.
A couple of websites/bloggs that I have found that I absolutely love and go to all the time…
www.glutenfreefix.com – Michelle Veilleux – my favorite!!! Her baking recipes are fabulous, she uses almond and coconut flour for her recipes (kinda pricey…still trying to find a better place to purchase these in bulk!!) and they make a world of difference in the taste.
www.Gluten-freegirl.com – Shauna James Ahern & the Chef – tons of wonderful recipes
www.food.com – this has all kinds of recipes, but you have to search for gluten-free items and everyone that I have chosen and tried have been pretty good!!
Another thing I like to share with people, going gluten-free is by far not cheap on the food budget… so if I find places where I can purchase my foods at discounted prices I am always jumping for joy!!! Aldi’s has tons of gluten-free foods (lunch meat, hotdogs, bacon, ham, a few dairy items, hamburger, chips, mayonnaise, etc…) you just have to check the back of the products back by the ingredients listed and you will see the “gluten-free” label and the price is about 1/3 you will find anywhere else “gf” items are sold. Also, fruits/veggies are a must when going “gf”, so Aldi’s has been beneficial in this area as well on the budget.
Some of the more tastier and harder to find items, I find at Greatest Grains Health Store in Davenport. They sometimes have these items on sale, so watch closely when purchasing!
HyVee does carry a lot of “gf” items in their Healthy Market area. I find that the store on 53rd in Davenport carries a better variety of items. However, Avenue of the Cities has gotten a lot better lately and carries a good variety of the different “gf” flours.
I have a lot of recipes that are tried and true and if interested would love to share them with you! One thing… going Gluten-free is a total commitment to living life differently. Hard to eat out, it’s not impossible, but be aware of cross-contamination and you might not be successful at all places that say they are. You must commit to cooking from scratch on just about everything you eat. There are more and more frozen and package items now for “gf” but I have found that food budget it is better to cook from scratch and go for those as “treats!”
With saying all of this, I wouldn’t go back living like I did! No way! I feel so much better and have my life back. I do not worry anymore about going and doing things because of the way I feel inside and how my body was going to react to what I was eating. My family has adjusted well, they sometimes don’t even know that they are eating “gf” foods! That says a lot in it’s self.
